Misfire Drill
If there is a misfire the battery has adopted the following procedure. It is not authentic but in the case of a misfire we need to be safe above all else. This is a much simpler drill and it has the most experienced members working the gun when a misfire has occurred.
A misfire has occurred.
Gunner's Command: DO NOT ADVANCE, PRIMER HAS FAILED! Action by cannoneers: #1 & #2 cross implements, #3 & #4 remain in position.
The cannon will remain inactive, with crossed implements, for 3 minutes.
Gunner's Command: NUMBER EIGHT, ADVANCE WITH GLOVES, GIMLET, & PICK! Action by cannoneers: #8 will take equipment from limber to gunner.
Gunner's Command: NUMBER TWO, ONE STEP TO THE REAR, MARCH! Action by cannoneers: #2 takes one step to the rear, #1 remains with crossed implement.
The gunner enters between the tube and the wheel like #2 does to load a round. The misfired primer is removed. The round is repricked. The gunner asks for a new primer from #4. The gunner seats the new primer and attaches the lanyard. #4 makes sure the lanyard remains slack. The gunner then returns to his post.
Gunner's Command: NUMBER TWO, ONE-STEP FORWARD, MARCH! Action by cannoneers: #2 takes one step forward.
Gunner's Command: NUMBER EIGHT, RETRIEVE EQUIPMENT! Action by #8: Retrieves gloves, gimlet and prick and returns to the limber.
Gunner's Command: CLEAR FRONT! At this point the drill is the same as the standard drill.
