Welcome! This book was published in 1890 by the 4th U.S. Artillery as a history of all of the officers that served with the Regiment from its inception in 1821 until the date of publication. Within this site are listed the records of all the these officers. You can search by rank (the officers for each respective rank are listed in the order they held it) or by the officers last name. Also included is a list of battles and engagements that the 4th U.S Artillery participated in during the American Civil War (1861-1865) and Indian Wars (1870-1878).
This book has been placed online by the webmaster as a primary source document for research on the regiment. It may be copied for your own research, however, please indicate where you got it from. This compilation was undertaken at the suggestion of Colonel Henry W.
Closson, our present Commander, to whom I make grateful acknowledgment
for his encouragement, assistance and advice. To 1st Lieutenant
Alexander B. Dyer, former Regimental Adjutant, I am under many obligations
for the Photographs of all the Colonels but one, and for his valuable List
of Battles and Engagements in which our Regiment participated during the
Civil War. To Sergeant Major Frederick Widenman, I am indebted for
his untiring assistance in searching the Regimental Records. My regret
is that I have been unable to obtain the pictures of all the Regimental
Staff.
